In recent years, insulin resistance in horses has been attributed to disruptions in the formation of the biomolecule Chromodulin. This polypeptide, consisting of a few amino acids, incorporates four chromium ions (with a triple positive charge; Cr3+). Chromodulin facilitates the binding of insulin to the insulin receptor located on the cell membrane. After successful binding, the enzyme tyrosine kinase is activated, which, through phosphorylation, opens the insulin receptor to allow the uptake of glucose. The formation of Chromodulin requires not only chromium but also the amino acids glycine, cysteine, glutamic acid, and asparagine, as well as vitamin B3. Yeast is considered a natural source of chromium. Ribose, a non-blood sugar-relevant pentose, is an integral part of RNA necessary for protein synthesis, as well as the energy carriers ATP, ADP, and AMP. It also plays a significant role as a secondary messenger to enhance hormonal effects within the cell.
